BATCHELDER- At Independence, Missouri, 6/16/1896
William Skidmore Batchelder, the deceased was born in NC in 1816 (80 yrs ago). He moved to Iowa (Correction TENNESSEE) in childhood, accepted the Gospel in 1839, baptized by Elder Andres in Murray Co - (replaced with HARDIN), TN. He moved to Nauvoo, IL, in 1840, was ordained to the office of elder in 1843, and in 1844 was ordained to the office of seventy. He was man of great courage and very zealous in preaching the gospel. He was married to Miss Huldah King at Nauvoo, 2/21/1842. The result of that union was 6 sons and 6 daughters, of whom 3 sons and 5 daughters, with his beloved companion survive to mourn his departure. He, with his wife, united with the Reorganization on their original baptism in 1880 at Buffalo, Iowa. Moved to Independence in 1887. Thus one of the old veterans of the restored Gospel has passed on to the paradise of God, and his body returns to the dust to await the time when the trump shall sound and call the dead in Christ to put on immortality and eternal life. His testimony was that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. He often heard Joseph and Hyrum oppose polygamy in the strongest terms and often denounced it from the public stand. Funeral services conducted from the Saints' Church by Elder R May, assisted by Elder Joseph Luff, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. R. May
Obituary published in the "Southern Standard" 26 Dec 1963
H L BATCHELOR, aged 89, of Arkadelphia, died late Sat night at home. Mr BATCHELOR was a retired farmer, and he had served as

OBITUARY "DEATH OF MR L BATCHELOR"
Leverett Batchelor was born in Putnam Co, GA, 7/30/1830, and died in Morgan Co, GA, 7/19/1911. On 10/10/1861, he enlisted in Putnam Light Infantry, Co G, 12th GA Rgmt, R T Davis, Capt. His service was in the Army of Northern VA, under Lee and Jackson, throughout the war. In the battle of McDowell, VA, 5/8/1862, he was severely wounded, but after several months concalescence served through to the end, being one of the few present at the surrender 4/9/1865. The subject of this memoir was the last one of a family remarkable for service as Confederate soldiers. He was one of 6 brothers who served in the same company with the writer, Leverett, David, Early, Solomon, Richard, and Cordy. They had one sister. Thus did the aged father give up all his boys to the Southern cause. David was killed at Spottsylvania 5/10/1864. Solomon,
Cordy, Richard, and Early suffered for months in northern prisons. At the
close, Leverett and his 4 brothers returned home, and as good citizens, entered heartily into the work of restoring the Southland. In this, Leverett
was engaged almost to the end of his life, having worked more than 40 yrs after surrender, and all this long life was in Putnam, except 2 yrs at the last with a married daughter just over the line in Morgan. He leaves to mourn their loss his widow, who was Miss Sarah Lancaster, to whom he was married in Jan 1850, and his daughter and 6 sons of whom Frank and Florence are among the most prominent and best loved citizens of this county. I am all the more pleased to write this memoir because my comrade was so quiet and unassuming in life. May he rest in peace". "ROBERT YOUNG"
DEATH: NOTE: Capt. Robert Young was Commander of Putnam Co GA Volunteers during the Civil War. In another clipping, almost exactly the same
story is told, with the addition that the Mr L Batchelor of this article
also left these sons: Leverett and Lee of Hot Springs Co, AR, and Richard and David of Dade Co, FL.
This second clipping tells that Leverett's brother David was mortally wounded and Leverett stayed with him on the battlefield until he died. Leverett then buried him in a shallow grave dug with his "bayonette".
DEATH: Obituary-"DEATH OF MRS. SARAH BATCHELOR"

Sarah's death is thought to have been 11/20/1924. The name of the newspaper is missing, but it would be fair to assume that the clipping is from a Putnam Co, GA newspaper.
